Coffee, Drinks and Food in Maribor
Though pint sized, Maribor packs a punch when it comes to local culture, food, and wine. Historically a wine producing region, Slovenia’s second city has graduated into an alpine resort town, and has started to develop a decent specialty coffee and natural wine scene to boot. Read on for our guide on where to get the best coffee, wine and food when in Maribor.
THE COFFEE
HI KO FI
HI KO FI is what you need, where you need it. A small team of well-trained baristas firing up easily the best coffee in all of Maribor, tucked away a short 5 minute walk from the main drag of town. These guys are making coffee that is certainly worth writing about. Whether you’re in town for a day, or are a local, you need to check out HI KO FI for any specialty coffee needs. using beans that are roasted locally and sourced from the best growers in India, Kenya and Ethopia, the guys at HI KO FI have truly adhered to the notion of doing one thing and doing it very, very well. You’d be silly not to sample one of their v60’s - go for it using Ethiopian beans if they have them. A gorgeous drop.

THE DRINK
LeVino Wine Bar
Like all good wine bars, LeVino can serve a few purposes. A place to take a date, a spot for a pre-dinner drink, or a spot to commiserate over something decent and organic. It can be all of these things and more, but, most importantly, LeVino serves up the best natural wines from the wine-producing region that surrounds Maribor. Though less popular with tourists than some of the bigger names in town, LeVino beats them all for quality of wine on the table, knowledge of the staff, and the ambience - this place is a sleek operation, all polished wood and tile. I only stayed for one glass of skin contact (read more about skin contact wine over here), but I’d give it my biggest recommendation on where to get a good glass in Maribor.

THE MEAL
GOSTILNA PRI LIPI
You know when a restaurant is good? When they don’t have a website. The guys at Gostilna Pri Lipi don’t care about yelp, trip advisor or your opinion, probably. located a 4km walk from town (but reachable via bus), the ultimate shrine to down-home cooking in Maribor, Gostilna Pri Lipi has been serving up perfect comfort food for generations. The prices here are unbeatable, and you can get an amazing soup, broth, weinerschnitzel and sauerkraut for less than 30 euro. Distinctly off the tourist trail and as far as you can possibly get from guide books, tourist offices and tour buses, Gostilna Pri Lipi is that last remaining thing of beauty on Europe: a restaurant that is amazing that hasn’t been wrecked by mass tourism. Go now, lest this befalls another great spot.
