The Best Natural Wine Bars of Barcelona

BAR SALVATGE

Carrer de Verdi, 50, 08012 Barcelona, Spain

Translating to ‘Bar Wild’, Bar Salvatge is easily my favourite drinking hole in Barcelona. Located just outside of the main tourist drag in Barcelona, Bar Salvatge is everything that you’d want in a natural wine bar. Low on pretense, high on hospitability, and carrying a seriously impressive array of low intervention, biodynamic and plain weird wines. Bar Salvatge is hugely popular with locals – by 7 pm on a Saturday night the place was completely full, which is decidedly early by Catalonian standards. After having a bottle of tinto and a meal here, I can see why. Expect wild, funky wines, served by the glass and bottle, for prices that are fairly reasonable. The decor in here is distinctly animalistic in style – with a hippopotamus serving as the undisputed totem above the bar. The bar staff are lovely, seriously knowledgeable about wine, and I’ll warrant this is the only place in town you can natural wine by the tap – for 4 euros a glass for the Bar Salvatge house Grenache, you’d be delirious to skip this. NB; They also sell Guttogau, which is reason enough to visit.

BAR BRUTAL

Carrer de la Princesa, 14, 08003 Barcelona, Spain

Bar Brutal. Possibly the bar I was most excited to check out in Barcelona. Owned by the enigmatic team behind ‘Brutal Wines,’ (more on that here), Bar Brutal, joined at the hip to the trendy restaurant Can Cisa, is without a doubt the hottest ticket in town in Barcelona. Good for a quick glass of wine or a leisurely feed, Bar Brutal serves up the best (and I mean best) in Spanish Natural wine. Here, you can get a wine made form grapes that you’ve never heard of before, served without ostentation, stress or hassle. All for a price that will not make your eyes water. What’s more, they sell Brutal Wines by the glass (5 euros), which is worth giving it a pilgrimage for alone. if you plan on going for a meal, I’d strong suggest booking ahead, which you can do either by walk-in earlier during the day, or by calling 34 933 19 98 81 - this place is busy every night of the week.

L’ANIMA DEL VIN

Carrer dels Vigatans, 8, 08003 Barcelona, Spain

L’Anima Del Vin (the soul of the wine), located just around the block from Bar Brutal is something of an enigma by Catalonia standards. A wine bar, selling mainly French natural wines, run by a French couple, that is hugely popular with locals. However, abnormality be damned, L’Anima is excellent. Barely more than a hole-in-the-wall, this cellar of a wine bar serves up some damn fine wines, and has a strong focus on unusual French varietals that are hard to come by outside of France. Would strong recommend a visit for anybody in the Gothic quarter. Stop by, get a bottle of Beaujolais, get a plate of oysters, and you’re laughing.
