Here we are. A listicle. However, this is one that is near and dear to my heart: Cataloguing the very best wine bars that I came upon in my recent month spent in Portugal. Read on for where to get the best wine, including ideas for spots that sell biodynamic, natural and non-intervention treats.

Kabra Velha
Rua de Fernandes Thomas 16, 3000-167 Coimbra, Portugal
Kabra Velha, which we’ve written about over here and here, is an awesome spot, and was easily my favourite spot in all of Coimbra. The owner, Bruno, is a passionate and knowledgeable guy, and is more than happy to banter with customers over music, viticulture and oenology. I spent two nights here, sampling the best Portuguese wines on offer. can personally recommend trying out any of the wines he recommends - especially the Lapa Dos Reis: if he has it, buy a bottle, best tinto going. His website can be found here.

VINO VERO
Tv. do Monte 30, 1170-255 Lisboa, Portugal
Vino Vero is without a doubt on the forefront of the natural wine movement in Portugal, and is one of the only spots in the city to get some excellent low intervention and minimal sulphite treats. The two owners are lovely, and carry a range of wines from bold Douro classics, to Beaujolais Nouveau. The vibe here is decidedly minimal, with a focus on share plate dining, living wines, and relaxed conversation. The prices, whilst more expensive than the closest supermarket, are reflective of the excellent drops on offer. You can find out more about them here.
CAPELA INCOMUMM
79-81, Travessa do Carregal 77, 4050-167 Porto, Portugal
Capela Incomumm. Located in an old chapel, not far from several of the more lively drinking holes in the city, this spot is part wine bar, part restaurant, with some of the best interior design that I came upon in Portugal. Without a doubt Capela Incomumm offers some of the best share plate dining in Porto, and has some decidedly affordable wines by the bottle. I would strongly recommend getting a bottle of the Girofle if they have any about. It’s good, good stuff. You can find their website here.

PROVA
R. de Ferreira Borges 86, 4050-209 Porto, Portugal
Prova was definitely one of my favourite wine bars in town. Located innocuously on the side of one of the many steep hills in town, Prova is a single room wine extravaganza. With a range including pet-nats, fruit forward Vinho Verdes and more funky natural stuff, Prova absolutely had the goods. We both opted for drier reds here, but I’m told some of the juicier, southern Portuguese wines on the menu here are extraordinary. If they have a bottle of the Mariposa, go for that. You can find their website here.

BY THE WINE
Rua das Flores 41 43, 1200-193 Lisboa, Portugal
By the wine provided me everything I needed shortly before attending a gig to see one of my favourite bands. By The Wine is definitely the hot spot in Lisbon. From the amazing wine-bottle ceiling to the superbly curated wine lists, this spot was absolutely cranking when I arrived. However, after sampling a Rose (very good), and a dry, Douro Valley red, I was more than convinced that this spot lived up to the hype. While I didn’t eat here, the food on offer looked very, very good indeed. I would strongly recommend booking a table if you plan on heading along, which you can do here.

This little slice of Europe is mainly known for its sweet pastries, fortified wine and glamorous beaches but Portugal has so much more to offer - namely its people. The incredible hospitality and passion of its population was hard to ignore and we fell in love with the people of Portugal as much as its food, wine and culture.
