Where to Get Good Coffee in Ljubljana
Črno Zrno
Alex at Črno Zrno served us easily the best coffee that we tried in Ljubljana. Serving exclusively Colombian coffee, he explained each cup that we tried, and told us stories about the farmers, extraction methods and terroir of the coffee region as he did so. Located a 5 minute walk from the heart of old town, Črno Zrno is your best bet for tasty specialty coffee in Ljubljana, and Alex is sure to teach you something about Colombia and Colombian coffee in the process. Stow Speciality Coffee
Stow Speciality Coffee is very serious about coffee. Reportedly, the owners started a coffee academy, a coffee festival, all while roasting for their own cafe and several clients. Occupying the garden level of the City Museum in downtown Ljubljana, Stow serves single-origin coffees in a variety of extraction methods, and you’ll be drinking it alongside a stunning arching glass wall that looks out over a quiet garden in the centre of the museum. While their prices are high by Ljubljana standards, Stow is a fantastic place to get chemex or v60, and I can assure you you’re unlikely to find a more scenic spot to drink decent coffee in town.
Hours: Tuesday - Sunday: 10 am - 6 pm (NB: Open till 9pm on Thursdays)
Address: Gosposka ulica 17, 1000 Ljubljana

Cafe Cokl
The eponymously titled Cafe Čokl, owned by roaster Tine Čokl has ben pouring specialty coffee in Ljubljana since 2012. The café has a homey vibe, but the coffee is excellent, the service outstanding, and the prices extremely good, given the quality of coffee you’re drinking. Of particular note is the fact that they make an excellent flat white, something which I was astounded by, given my proximity to Australia. However, the coffee here is really great, and you can guarantee you’ll run in to a few students floating around. We spent a solid hour and a half in here, working on this very blog (they have amazing wi-fi), and had a good conversation with the staff there - apparently this place is extremely busy during summer. However, it’s all testament to the fantastic, fantastic quality coffee on offer here.
Hours: Monday - Friday: 7am - 9pm. Saturday/Sunday: 9am - 8 pm.

Kavarna Moderna
Tucked away in the Museum of Modern Art lies Kavarna Moderna, a sleek café serving up some of the best coffee in the city. Understated wood and bright-coloured pillows meets Scandinavian cool here. The baristas make a mean cold brew, filter, and espresso, and will do you a mean walnut cake with your V60. It’s a local delicacy done very well. One of the few places in town that can truly call itself a ‘specialty café,’ Kavarna Moderna is perfect for any ex-pats, visitors or locals whom are needing their fix and won’t settle for the rubbish being sold by the canal (with Tozd as the lone exception)
Hours: Tuesday - Thursday, 10 am - 8 pm, Friday; 10 am - 12 am, Saturday/Sunday 10 am - 8 pm, closed Monday.
Address: Cankarjeva cesta 15, 1000 Ljubljana

TOZD
Charming, centrally located, and extremely inviting, TOZD is the café on this list where it would be equally appropriate to order a biodynamic wine alongside your espresso. Part bar, part library and part café, TOZD is owned by a chef who spent years working in Australia, so you know he is on top of third-wave coffee and decent cafe fare. In addition to locally roasted coffee supplied by Escobar, TOZD is one of the best places to try Slovenian craft beer and regional artisan spirits. You can also get a bowl of homemade soup, made with market-fresh ingredients, or a charcuterie-and-cheese plate. Ruster, the bar’s signature cold brew goes down perfectly well, even in winter, and they also serve up wine by heaps good wine, which is a massive plus for me, as that wine is awesome. We both had an espresso here, and can vouch for the skill of the barista behind the machine, he certainly knew what he was doing. The food was also great, with both of us eating a vaguely ‘deconstructed’ style salmon sandwich, pretentious in principle, very tasty in reality.
Hours: Open Monday to Sunday, 9am to 1 am.
Address: 1000, Gallusovo nabrežje 27, 1000 Ljubljana
