The Very nice guide to Ljubljana

The coffee

Stow cafe

Tucked away beneath the museum of Ljubljana stands another monument. While specialty coffee can be hard to find in Europe, Stow Café proves that there will always be diamonds in the rough. With a formidable team of baristas behind the machines, Stow Cafe is one of the only places in town to get a decent filter, a cold brew, or a batch brew worth drinking. The prices here are expensive but thoroughly worth it. We spent about 10 euro on two espresso and two v60 filters, thoroughly worth it for two Australians struggling with (good) coffee deficit.

The Drink

Wine bar Šuklje

Wine Bar Suklje is a refined gem along the canal of Ljubljana. Staffed by young wine lovers, Suklje stocks both international and local wines, and serves up a solid amount by the glass. Ask the staff for a recommendation or go with the ‘wine by music genre’ option in the menu. We had a few glasses of their house wine by the Suklje label here, which was awesome, but you can also buy some premium drops. Also, the orange wines on offer here are fantastic - you certainly won’t leave thirsty.

THE FOOD

pARMA PIZZA

There isn’t enough space in a single blog post to cover what makes Parma Pizza so excellent. As the oldest pizzeria in Ljubljana, Parma Pizza holds a special place in the city’s heart, and is located at the entrance to one of the more famous Yugoslavia-era arcades in town. Speaking of Yugoslavia, Parma Pizza was opened in the 1970’s, has kept the exact same recipe for its pizza ever since, and survived the fall of that empire in 1991. Since then this little pizza shop has gone rom strength to strength, still serving up amazing, thick-crusted pizza for extremely cheap prices. Each pizza has a name that is significant to Slovenia, and you’d be hard pressed to find a more filling meal in town. My advice; get a blueberry juice with your pizza - tastes like something from the Wonka Factory. You’ll spend less than 20 euro for three pizzas and will leave fit to bursting. Don’t miss this one in town.

Wine Store Štorija

I had to throw this one in. While I wrote all about it Wine Store Storija over here, no food and wine blog about Ljubljana would be close to complete without including something about Storija. Owned by the charismatic David, Wine Store Storija has over 2000 wines, with a strong focus on Slovenian biodynamic, raw and natural producers. Located centrally, Wine Store Storija is the perfect place to have a few glasses of something you’ve not heard of before, and you’ll be sure to leave with a few bottles of something weird, fresh and lively. We certainly did.
